Breast Augmentation

I. (e) Vertical scar breast augmentations with lift.

In cases were the breast is droopy or ptotic. A lift may be needed. The extent of the scar will depend on your anatomy and the degree of ptosis (droopiness) present. When a lift is performed it is called a mastopexy.

Mastopexy usually takes one and a half to three and a half hours. Techniques vary, but the most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast. See picture below.

Incisions outline the area of skin to be removed and the new position for the nipple.

Sometimes, if the anatomy is correct the scar can be limited to include the areola and a small vertical incision only, eliminating the bottom scar. This is called the verticle breast lift.

The incision outlines the area from which breast skin will be removed and defines the new location for the nipple. When the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are moved to the higher position.

Skin formerly located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Sutures close the incisions, giving the breast its new contour.

The skin surrounding the areola is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line extending downwards from the nipple area.

An implant may also be inserted along with your breast lift and will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall.

Not everyone is a candidate for this procedure. It depends on the amount of ptosis (droopiness) your breast has. Sometimes if the amount of lifting required is too great we have to use the traditional extended T- Shaped scar , if there is minimal ptosis then we can use the circumareolar scar (minimal scar) .
