V. (c) Expandable / post operatively adjustable breast implants.

The implant was designed by Dr. Hilton Becker originally as a reconstructive device. Dr. Mendieta has developed a remarkable reputation for natural-looking expansion augmentation. To be exact, expansion-augmentation of the breast is a technique for enlargement of the female breast that boasts several unique advantages over the standard augmentation method.

In a standard procedure, the size is discussed prior to the operation, and the surgeon inserts the implant, the size of which cannot be changed after the procedure. Unlike the standard augmentation, the expansion technique only begins after the implant is placed (usually under the pectoral muscle).

The way it works: A small reservoir attached to a fill tube is left near the incision, under the skin. Soon after, during repeat office visits, additional saline is injected into the implant with a syringe and needle until the appropriate volume and symmetry is reached. Using an expander, the space can slowly be increased postoperatively until the appropriate volume is reached. Also by using this method, differences in the size of the two breasts can be equalized.

Another use of the expander is to change the shape of the breasts, either to the "scooped" look or the rounder look, depending upon the patient's preference. And, of course it can be used by the very picky patient who wants to be absolutely sure of her final breast size.

Patients favor this procedure over the standard technique primarily because of:

a.) the natural appearance of even overly large breasts

b.) The ability of the women to have very direct influence in the final size and shape of her breasts.

The results are absolutely outstanding due to the fact that the breasts look incredibly natural.
